Dress Code

In most Japanese middle schools, students are required to wear school uniforms. Different schools wear different uniforms, however there is no difference in the way students from the same school dress. There are variations on what the school uniform looks like.  For instance, in some schools boys are required to wear a blazer, shirt, tie and slacks. In other schools, boys wear shirts and slacks. Girls usually wear items such as a blazer, blouse and skirt.  In some schools the girls’ blouses resemble a sailor’s shirt.

Teachers in Japan are not required to wear a school uniform. However they are expected to follow a professional dress code when in school.   Male teachers often wear shirts and slacks to school.  Female teachers wear skirts and blouse combinations or dresses.  It is almost unheard of for female teachers to wear slacks or short sleeve blouses to school.
